Your Questions About Vnc Client

Lisa asks…

How can I view an existing window from a new VNC client?

On my linux box, I have my IDE running, and start vncserver. From my Windows PC, I’m running TightVNC, connect to my linux box, and see an empty workspace with one xterm window. How can I see my IDE from my TightVNC client?

Thanks.

admin answers:

You need to change your home .vnc/xstartup file from xterm to kde.

Laura asks…

Is there a way to show a VNC client (like Apple Remote Desktop) a ‘fake’ screen?

Yea, basically the question above. As in, not the screen that you are on. So, like, if you could take a screenshot of your desktop and put it up instead of the actual screen, which would be you surfing the internet. Thanks,
VidGame.

admin answers:

That would be an “overlay.” I don’t know how to do it, but it is possible because certain programs like MPlayer and the Apple DVD player can display a movie playing on your desktop as an overlay.

If you try to screen cap the movie displayed that way it won’t work, you get the desktop, not the overlay.

It’s a common trick in Windows, too. The fake Russian antivirus puts an overlay on the desktop of infected computers to make it difficult to remove. [it alters the desktop.ini files in Windows].

Sandra asks…

Can you use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to a VNC client?

I mean have the server running on one pc and use remote desktop connection in xp to view that desktop.

admin answers:

I don’t think RDP will connect to a pc only running VNC. VNC can be downloaded for free, and you can download the ‘viewer’ to connect to a pc that is running VNC. Otherwise, on Windows XP or later, you should be able to enable RDP for connections.
