admin answers:
The IP addresses you get when you connect to a router at home are known as RFC1918 addresses and are “private” IP addresses. This means that these addresses are not accessible from hosts on the Internet. Think about it for a second, if your computer’s IP address is 192.168.1.100, there are millions of other computers in the world with that same IP address, because there are millions of people with the same router. How would the Internet be able to handle that? The answer is that it can’t.
Your router has public and a private interfaces. The private interface is usually something like 192.168.1.1 and the public interface gets an IP address from your Internet service provider. You can find out what your public IP address is by going to www.whatismyip.com from a computer that is connected to your router.
In order to connect to your computer from the Internet, you need to use your public IP address, but you have to tell the router what to do with the VNC traffic when it received it from the Internet. That’s where port forwarding comes in, and works like this…you forward TCP port 5900 to your computer’s private IP address (the 192.168.x.x one). Exact instructions are beyond the scope of this answer since you haven’t given us any information at all about what router and ISP you have. However, you should now have enough information to know what to search for to find what you need. Good luck!

Tight vnc can’t figure it out please help?
ok my dad and I are in America and my uncle is in India and my dad wants to remote desktop with our computers. So I found tight vnc which is a free software based on realvnc. I got the connection working over here in America between my dads laptop and my computer but when I
tried to connect to my uncles computer it didn’t work. He installed it too and ran the server. He gave me is ip too by going to whatismyip.com. I won’t say the ip address cuz I know it’s not safe but please tell me how to get it working. I know I’m doing something wrong. Thanks

admin answers:
If he is behind a router, then NAT is being used and you would need a VPN connection in order to connect to him.
If that is the case, then I’d recommend using a program called Hamachi to overcome this.

How can I remote log or VNC via internet to my computer?
My other computer is in Spain (am in the UK), and my brother is having problems using it. I want to remote log or VNC into the computer. I have installed TIght VNC on both computers but when I put either the IP address or the computer name it wont let me access it. Can anyone help me or have a better idea how I can access the computer from the UK? Proper answers please. Cheers

admin answers:
The easiest solution for quick access is Teamviewer – get your brother to download the customer module – he just has to double click it and send you the ID and password via email to connect remotely.
Now, you download the full version which you can run without installation too – you enter the details and you should connect remotely to the otther pc.

Can anyone help me get Tight VNC working over a LAN?
I’m trying to set up tightvnc over a local area network, at least for now. I’m fairly tech-savvy, but no matter what I’ve tried, this just won’t work. However, I keep on coming across the error, failed to connect to server (server name).
Both computers are on the same network and can see each other just fine. I’ve typed in the correct IP address. I’ve tried both the internal IP address, as well as the external one with the port 5800.
I’ve configured the VNC ports for port forwarding (5500, 5800, and 5900), but I don’t think that matters for connecting to an internal IP address ( I could be wrong).
Any help? Whatever I try, the exact error message is “Failed to connect to server (192.168.1.4)” I even tried it with the server name instead of the IP address, but same problem.
Thanks in advance.

admin answers:
Try disabling your firewalls temporarily. Disconnect the computers from the internet for the duration if it makes you feel safer. This is most likely a firewall issue and this will confirm it – if it suddenly works you need to revisit your firewall configs.
This is a home network? Many corporate networks disable all but the needed protocols at the router, if it is a home network though you shouldnt have to worry

Tight VNC Software?
I would like to set up a server (a Solaris work station) and viewer (Windows on a laptop). Can someone please give me step-by-step instructions to do so? Thanks a lot……

admin answers:
Not much to say. The Solaris server should have VNC running (listening). Once you know the IP address of the Solaris server, run VNC on the Windows Laptop. Be sure to setup a password and you will have to open a port in the firewall if you plan to take control of the server outside the network.
