Your Questions About Real Vnc

Sandra asks…

Does anyone know how to use Real VNC?

I live in california, I am trying to connect to my cousins computer in chicago. We are both behind a router and I can’t get a connection on both computers. Can anyone help?
I am a beginner at this, one of my friends told me about this software, but then he moved away and never got a chance to help me with this software.

admin answers:

Routers have nothing to do here, it helps to route your IP pachets.
First you have to ping the IP of your cousins. If you receive an reply, it is a good sign.
Then you have to act as a client , with VNC Viewer. Start it and when it’s requesting host, type their IP address ( I suppose you have it !). Be aware if you have firewall activated on your PC ( or their PC) , it might block you !
Remote PC should have VNC server installed and configured ( usual it requests for a access password ). A small icon on lower-right corner ( on taskbar ) with Vnc shows if server is active. If your VNC Viewer contacts the server, it will require you the expected password, if not, you have to check VNC server settings.

This was a short explanation ! I didn’t know how familiar are you with IP stuff !

admin answers:

If it will run with ubuntu it should also run with xubuntu. Here is a link to someone who had a problem and finally got it running.
Good luck

Joseph asks…

How do I setup Real VNC?

I need to set up Real VNC software (www.realvnc.com) to control my PC at home from my PC at school (orlando and Miami). Both are on DSL, nothing too complicated. The instructions on RealVNC’s site are SOOO confusing! I can’t seem to get it right! Someone please help me do this!

admin answers:

I am assuming that you have some sort of hardware firewall between the DSL modem and your network. Given that, you’ll need to figure out how to do “port forwarding” to the IP address of your computer (need to have a static IP address on your computer) of traffic on Port 22, TCP/IP.

Trying to connect with real vnc?

Ok I have real vnc on my home computer and the work computer already had it. I am trying to connect to the computer at work from home. I have my ports forwarded correctly and i did a test at the real vnc website and it said it was fine. So what do i have to do to connect? I used the viewer and put in my work computers external ip, but connection timed out. Also when i hover my mouse over the vnc icon on my home computer it says my local ip, not my external.

admin answers:

U have to have the vnc server runningon both computers, also if your going through a router u have to port forward them to the internal ip adress that might be the problem… If u use the external ip adress and its on router with multiple computers which computer will it know to connect too?? Its been a while since ive configuread a vnc so i might be wrong, if so someone plz correct me..
