Your Questions About Debian Linux

Helen asks…

Suse, Mandriva, Linspire, Ubuntu, Debian?

I’ve narrowed my Linux search down to the above. Which one is most user friendly, Most attractive, easiest for a beginner to pick up?

admin answers:

Hi :)
tried all but Lin/Freespire (even RedHat) and always ended up with OpenSuse.;
mostly because (Open-)Suse has a **very** good hardware support, whereas other distro always fail to configure some of the hardware properly; unless you are keen spending nights getting the HW (& matching programs / drivers) running, stick with what works.
OpenSuse does, for me, even though, admittedly, my rig isn’t exactly your average LostDOS pc >:) =))

another advantage of OpenSuse, even though it comes at the price of a hefty download (> 3GB) is that it includes KDE as well as Gnome as well as pretty much any graphical user interface, out there. Even though Gnome is tempting for a fresh convert from LostDOS, because it prechews a lot of aspects of the OS, just like LostDOS does. If you are really looking to move away from that patronizing aspect, KDE might be a better choice. You may of course install KDE on top of any distro afterwards, but, hell, why not get it out of the box, right? OpenSuse lets you install all of them (!!! GBs) and lets you try them out side by side (even though the HW updates are not always ported automatically from one GUI to the others)
the (Open-)Suse support forums provide the usual support, of course.

PS: would recommend to start w/ version 10.1, as 10.2 comes w/ Xorg 7.2 which isn’t widely supported yet.

Sharon asks…

Do you like KNOPPIX Linux?

I like it. It’s a pretty good distro, though I don’t like most Debian things.

admin answers:

Knoppix is for system diagnostics and recovery, it can even crack a password from the windows sam file,
if you don’t really know what knoppix is for then you shouldn’t be using it,
most people don’t even know how to access the applications via root (or even the root password)

its bloated full of system tools, network tools, diagnostic tools, etc – all the tools a pc doctor uses

name me another 700mb live cd that can do what knoppix does – there isn’t one

if you have to use it but find the live cd slow to load, then find you cannot transfer anything to cd/dvd then try this

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-knoppix-510/

i fix pc’s with it all the time

Carol asks…

win32 debian installer help?

i need to know if after installing i will be able to keep windows and still have linux
http://goodbye-microsoft.com/

admin answers:

If you install Windows first (or already have it installed), yes. If you install Debian first, who knows? Windows does what it wants when it installs. Of course you’ll need at least 2 partitions for Linux (a small swap partition in addition to at least one Linux partition), so you’ll have to be careful that you don’t shrink your Windows partition so far that Windows doesn’t work. If you install Linux to a partition that already exists (which you break into 2), or you install Linux to another drive, you have nothing to think about.

John asks…

Sabayon Linux Question.?

I read a little bit about this distro and I’d like to try it, but I have a simple question. Is it RPM based or Debian based?

admin answers:

As has been already said Sabayon is Gentoo based and in general very impressive. One thing of note for a Linux distro. It has a fair amount of bloat so ideally you need a fairly high spec. Machine to run it

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Your Questions About Debian Linux

Helen asks…

which distro of Linux is better?

ubuntu? knoppix? debian???
I really don’t know, really, to be honest.

admin answers:

If you just want to get straed in linux i would say ubuntu once u get more advacned and want to learn about the internals try ubuntu server or debian.

Ken asks…

which is a better linux distro:Vector Linux or Arch Linux?

i’m quite the intermediate computer user and i have experience with debian. so you can be pretty technical with me

admin answers:

Depends on the hardware you’re installing to imho, I just installed Vector on an old 233mmx and it runs great, with the xfce 4.4 desktop, looks great.

Joseph asks…

What is the Ubuntu all about?

I have acer laptop installed with windows 7 home premium. I am thinking of buying a mac laptop. But before I buy a mac, I want to try ubuntu. As far as I know, it is free of charge and its interface even looks like mac interface. I am new to both mac and ubuntu. What are the pros and cons of ubuntu? If I just want to try ubuntu, do I need to shrink windows partitions. Some people say that Linux is the kernel of Ubuntu. If so, what is Linux Mint? Is the linux mint a kernel or OS. What is more, I saw many different version of linux mint on the its website such as Mint Debian, Linux Mint 10, Mint 9 fluxbox, Mint 9 Xfce, Mint 9 KDE. Does anyone have ideas? I will really appreciate any opinion and suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

admin answers:

Ubuntu is indeed a free operating system. It’s major attraction is that the source code is completely open. Anyone who cares to look can tell exactly how the OS works. They could also make custom changes and distribute them if they saw fit.

Ubuntu is what is called a distribution of Linux. A distribution of Linux is essentially a different “flavor” of the same idea. At the very basic level, all distributions of Linux are the same thing.

Linux and MacOS are similar because they are both offshoots of an older operating system, Unix.

If all you want to do is try Ubuntu, you don’t even need to install it. You can run the disc completely off of a CD with no hard drive install.

As for pro’s and cons:

PROS:
It’s (legally) free
Windows viruses can’t effect it
Loads faster than most Windows versions
Something new to learn
Less demanding on hardware than Windows
Terrific online community that helps newbies

CONS:
No mainstream gaming support. There are Linux games, of course, but you’re not going to be running Call of Duty of a Ubuntu machine anytime soon.
Somewhat steep learning curve

Charles asks…

how do you use a SATA hd on a non bill gates OP?

op is linux e.g.debian. I have used a scisi card and this works, but is there an alternative?

admin answers:

You can use SATA for lynux installation but you have to reformat HD with the support on the lynux startup diskette or from the installation CD and then install lynux from CD. Veradisca & Best Regards, Neven.

Lisa asks…

How do I change the keyboard commands in rtorrent?

I’m trying to run rtorrent in a screen session in debian linux. The problem that arises is that rtorrent uses a number of the same commands that screen does (crtl-d for example). The commands don’t reach rtorrent. I have read that I can change the commands for screen, though the explanations of how to do so is never really that well explained, and I’m so used to screen that I’d hate to change it. I’d rather change rtorrent, which I’m not as used to using.

admin answers:

Well linux is CASE sensitive

Control-D : stops an active download, removes a stopped download.

Control – d : kills the active shell

anyways suggestion why not use deluge its a pretty neat torrent client like utorrent, u can add more trackers on it as well

Steven asks…

Name of VNC tool that lets others download custom exe?

I can’t remember the name. There was some free VNC tool that would let you create a custom exe that others could download to make it easier for you to help them with their computer. So for example you can tell your grandmother to download this, and then you can go in and fix whatever problem the computer has.
Anyone know the name of this?
I found it. It is UltraVNC, specially the single click (SC) version:

http://www.uvnc.com/addons/singleclick.html

See these stories about it:

http://www.lifehacker.com/software/vnc/geek-to-live-tech-support-with-ultravnc-singleclick-198532.php

http://paininthetech.com/fix_your_moms_computer_with_ultravnc

admin answers:

Are you referring to RealVNC software? You can download it at www.realvnc.com

If your grandmother is using Windows XP, there is another remote desktop program built-in called “Remote Desktop Connection”. On your grandma’s computer, enable it by doing this:

Start->Control Panel-> System -> “Remote” Tab -> check on “Allow users to remotely connect to this computer” . Also if you have a firewall, make sure that it allows “Microsoft remote desktop connection”. I hoped that answered your question.

Thomas asks…

i have 2 computers, both with the same IP addres, and don’t want to download ANY vnc applications?

how do i control one from the other, to monitor it because i need to make sure the other isn’t going on any innapropriete websites (younger child)

admin answers:

First of all each computer has to have a unique ip address. If you don’t, it will create a conflict in the switch/hub/router you are using.

I think your problem lies in the fact that you want technology to do your parenting. The best answer i can give you is. Put both computer in a public area and monitor your kids when they are on there. No piece of software is perfect, nor can they be a perfect subsitute for you

Fix your ip address conflict, and you should be able to use vnc. But vnc is a terminal program, and depending on user accounts, you may or may not be able to see what the kids have done/been.

Paul asks…

Is there a Mocha VNC application that is compatible with the iPod touch?

I tried to download the Mocha VNC application on my iPod touch 2, but says you have to have the iPhone 3g. Is there a Mocha VNC app that will work on my iPod touch, if not is there another application like it?
I know that it was compatible, but now it is not. Are there any other similar apps?

admin answers:

Mocha vnc works on ipod ive done it.

Betty asks…

is tight VNC safe to download, and if so then how do you use it?

i have the thing from the second link, tightvnc.com

admin answers:

If you mean the one I think, it has a good reputation:

Best way to use it is to follow the instructions. ;-)

Your Questions About Debian Linux

Lizzie asks…

If a virus can be written in perl … can it exicute in any of these Linux OS?

Suse
Fedora Core 5
Debian
Ubuntu
Mandriva
Slackware
Mepis
Gentoo
Knoppix

Usually installed by default
I spelled “execute” wrong lol

admin answers:

I just upgraded my Ubuntu to the 64bit 7.04 version a few days ago (so I could have the fun of trying to get 32bit functionality with 64bit – hummmm). Anyway I looked into synaptic to see what perl was installed (this is pretty much a stock install as regards to perl).

I found version 5.8.8-7build1 of perl and perl-base as well as perl-modules, and numerous perl-interfaces to other components. Again, I have no interest in perl as such, and did not install them – they were put there as part of the standard installation.

Will a skilled programmer be able to write something in perl to cause damage? You have to ask a skilled perl programmer. I don’t run as root, I rely on sudo – like a good “Ubuntuii”. I suspect if someone wrote something and convinced me to run it, I could lose a lot of data – but I would have to be convinced to run “it” first.

I am not convinced that all of the other responders are correct in what they say – and not necessarily in reference to perl.

Nancy asks…

Is there a way to PM someone on IRC without joining their channel.?

If I’m in any channel on an IRC server, I can PM anyone in that channel. However, is it possible to PM someone if I know their nick, but am not in the same channel as them, possibly not in any channel at all (but still connected to the server)

I run Debian Linux, my usual IRC client is Kopete, however I’d like an answer for how to do this on all platforms.

Donna asks…

Print everything shown on screen (Linux Terminal)?

I remember watching the film Wargames and David Lightman switches on his printer and everyhting shown on his screen every line as it is shown is printed off via what looks like to be a dot matrix printer. I was just wondering if this was possible and how this would be done on Debian?

admin answers:

Try this
get the screen you want to copy
hit the key that says PRINT SCRN
here’s where it gets a little tricky
you then must open WORD PROGRAM
when that screen comes up and is ready go to the top left hand and click on EDIT
now the only thing you should be able to do is PASTE
click on that and then whatever you wanted to print should then appear on that blank word document.
Go back to the top left hand screen then find print and click on that.
For some reason i’m not sure of it will print the screen, but mine always comes up only using half of the printed area that’s available.
Hope that works for ya.

Your Questions About Debian Linux

This is more of a poll, but what *NIX do you prefer? And if Linux what distro?

fbsd? openbsd? debian? gentoo? mac osx?
I should have been a bit more detailed. I currently have my RHCE, just wanting some opinion here. Leaving this question open a bit longer…

admin answers:

I currently use Gentoo Linux on my laptop, but I would not recommend it if you do not have a fast machine, as it is source-based and all packages are compiled before they are installed. This is both the best and worst part of the distribution :)

If you don’t have the patience to compile everything, I recommend Debian, which has en even better package management system than Gentoo, but can download pre-compiled binaries. I would run it in the unstable branch, though to get the latest and greatest software.

admin answers:

Hi, I would suggest openSUSE 10.3.

Its the most polished, stable, best looking and easiest linux distro to use. If u use any other u will think linux is buggy and unpolished, suse is the best.

Also use Kde and not Gnome, cause gnome is ugly and feature less.

Here is my suse blog, it will give u many tutorials and help in setting up your system and as well an introduction to linux and opensuse.

Edit:

What ever u do don’t use ubuntu. I hate it seriously do u really want to use an OS called ubuntu? Its ugly and buggy and doesn’t even have a proper name.

To element_skater, u can shut the f**k up cause ubuntu is the least innovative distro in the world. They haven’t done crap for linux, suse devs made compiz fusion, they made apparmor, they made evolution, they sponsor ever little linux project in the world. Suse is by far the most polished distro, if u use shit like ubuntu then u get a bad taste in your mouth.

Your Questions About Debian Linux

Laura asks…

What distro of Linux should I use?

I’ve used Windows exclusively all my life. As a kid (Read: 5 years old) I learned MS-DOS but haven’t had to call upon that knowledge in forever. Mostly have used Windows XP and Windows 7 and am quite comfortable with them. I tried Ubuntu some time back but I couldn’t figure out anything to do with it – like to make it my main OS to use instead.

I play games on my computer, web browse, stream and listen to music/videos (I probably need to be able to use iTunes since I have an iPhone if this is possible – I assume so), watch movies, and do some light photo editing. I know there are a billion distros out there. I’d rather not use Ubuntu (If not for the simple reason it seems like everyone uses it – I’d like to be different). I was looking at maybe Mint or Debian. But I’m open to any pretty large distros – preferrably one that I could learn to use with relative ease. I’d like to actually get to a point where I can just use Linux INSTEAD of Windows – but speaking from my current knowledge level that is a rather optimistic view. It’s going to be a secondary OS for now but I’m going to try and make myself use it more often.

So what suggestions can you Linux users offer? For someone who DOES NOT get Linux right now (I know it seems like most people who know Linux assume everyone knows some things about Linux – but I don’t like many others). I do plan to use a tutorial and online guides to help in my learning.

admin answers:

Overall a Linux based platform can certainly perform most of the tasks equally as well as a Windows based platform using the likes of Ubuntu and its derivative distros. However Linux does have its limitations with some applications and in particular gaming. For example alongside Linux Mint I retain a partition with XP on to run specific applications which cannot be adapted through a Windows compatability layer such as Dreamweaver CS5, Office 2007 etc.

There is Wine which is a windows compatability layer

Installing and Using Wine on Ubuntu

http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/wine

A list of Windows apps. That work using Wine can be found on the Wine Application Database (AppDB)

http://appdb.winehq.org/

Wine will not run all windows applications and it should be considered somewhat of a compromise rather than an absolute solution

If you intend to run a number of Windows apps. Then Dual Booting is the best way forward

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning

Download Ubuntu Desktop Edition

Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) User Guide

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Maverick

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 10 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 10.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint has a similar installer called mint4win (mint4win works the same as the Ubuntu Windows installer so the instructions outlined above are almost identical)

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. Mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

Sandra asks…

Questions about how Windows uses your computer compared to Linux?

My older friend, who used to be a firmware engineer is as very good at using EMACS, told me that Windows leaves junk behind in your RAM and that Linux basically recycles your RAM when it comes to use. Is Linux also “Greener” (Enviromentally) than Windows? I use Ubuntu 8.10 on my PC and it’s super fast. I even installed Debian KDE 3.5 on an old desktop at school and it is quite possibly the fastest computer there. So, is Linux a much healthier “diet” for your PC and can it expand the computer’s lifespan?

admin answers:

Linux and Mac use a different file system that doesn’t suffer from fragmentation like NTFS. To top it off, every piece of software you install on Windows wants to add itself to the startup list; this slows down the system a lot.

Yes Linux can retain a computers usefulness for a longer period of time because it requires less resources to operate; while with Windows, each new addition requires more computing power.

Chris asks…

What is the strongest Linux?

I mean against spyware or a crash. I heard Debian or Ubuntu are the strongest. I dont care about the power or anything. I mean the resistance to a crash or spyware.

admin answers:

Any Linux will be much more resistant to spyware or crashes than Windows.
If you want something truly indestructible, try Puppy Linux, which runs entirely from CD/DVD and saves onto the disk or a USB stick. Your PC’s harddisk will not be touched in any way.

Carol asks…

What open source operating system would you recommend?

Hello,
I want to replace my Windows system with a variant of Linux OS. As I am not used to work on Linux, I would need an operating system that would be quite user friendly.
What do you recommend me? RedHat, Debian, Mandrake, Fedora? I really cannot decide upon one, as I did not try anyone before.
I will need it for personal use.
Thanks,
Alex

admin answers:

A great starting point for Linux users is Ubuntu. You can get a CD from them for free, it’s open source, and very user friendly. It is made specifically for just this kind of situation.

Your Questions About Debian Linux

Trying to install Debian?

I am trying to do a clean install of Debian on a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. It fails half way through the installation. I have never encountered this before when installing Linux. Fedora fails half way through as well. A Dell Inspiron 8600 is an older laptop. But I upgraded the memory to 1 GB. The hard drive is 60 GB. How can I do a clean install of either Debian or Fedora? I have been using Unetbootin to do the installations. I have also tried burning the iso’s of the distributions, too and those fail as well.

Check your hard drive. 100% of the problems I have found installing that occur in multiple distros occur because the hard drive is failing.

Learning to program in Linux?

Hey what is the linux library called. Like the win32 one is called the WinAPI? Specifically the debian one.

admin answers:

You mean the kernel?

It depends on what type of you computer you have. If you have a standard 32 bit system then you’ll want the i386 version of the kernel.

Once you have debian installed on your system using the RPM Package manager. Just do a search for the latest kernel or source.

Good luck!

Your Questions About Debian Linux

Robert asks…

Good beginner Linux distro?

I’m a seasoned Windows pro, but a linux newbie.

I’d like to switch, but I’m having trouble settling on one distro.

I’ve got it narrowed down to Debian, Gentoo, or Ubuntu. I find that Fedora is a bit too “ambitious” or me, but I really like the kind of quality control Debian has.

Thoughts?

admin answers:

I used to use only Windows, now I use mainly Ubuntu. I feel very comfortable in Ubuntu, more than in Windows, although it did take a little getting used to.

From what I’ve been hearing, Gentoo and Debian are less suitable for a beginner, although I’ve never seriously tried either.

Getting Flash, multimedia, and Java support is no big deal, although if you want to skip getting that set up, then go with Linux Mint as recommended above. Ubuntu doesn’t include them by default for legal reasons, especially in the US.

@KeWr: The guy is a newbie, so I’m pretty sure he should start by taking things easy, then go deeper if he wants to. And what exactly is your problem that you have to put down other people’s work, just because you aren’t in their target market?

Linda asks…

Which are your preferred Linux distros. ?

For me in order:
Ubuntu 7.10
Linux Mint 4.0

Sabayon Linux 3.4
Mandriva 2008.1 Spring
SimplyMEPIS 7.0
Linux Mint 4.0 Fluxbox

A very cynical answer. Which ones do you use?

Trustix Secure Linux (defunct)
Fedora
Mandriva

John asks…

how can I record audio from a movie playing in linux?

i use debian testing.

admin answers:

There is a neat program called Audacity. It works under Linux, Windows and Mac. That will record the sound stream as long as you configure it properly, and it is a fairly straight forward program – but you do have to tinker with it to figure out where things are.

Chris asks…

Debian or Slackware?

Hi, Question says It all. I’m not a pro with Linux but I’m Familiar with Command lines/Shells etc, And I have used Debian in the past so I’m familiar with it but I want to try out something different so I’m leaning towards Slackware at the moment. Anyone have a suggestion? Is Slackware any good? (Please don’t tell me to use Ubuntu, I have tried it I hate it.)

admin answers:

For me Debian, however to be honest ive never used slackware.

When you say you dont like Ubuntu, was it the old 7.04, a new Ubuntu has just been released 7.10 and is much improved.

Download link is :

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Also consider Linux Mint Cassandra 3.0 or Linux Mint Celena 3.1

Download link is :

As these new Linux Distros are being released they are becoming increasingly user friendly

This may not have totally answered your question, however I hope some of this is useful.

Linux is a learning curve for us all.

Edit :

Here is a useful link to keep you up to speed on the latest distros :

Chris asks…

Linux users: If I install two distros on one hard drive, will they share a swap partition…?

or do I need to create a seperate swap for each one?

The two distros would be Debian and Sabayon, if that makes a difference.

admin answers:

Yes, because they should both be using swapfs as the filesystem for the swap file. Since both systems will not be booted up, it will be fine.

William asks…

Difference between Linux distributions?

I have been puzzled as to what is the actual difference between the various Linux distributions – Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, OpenSUSE, Debian, etc. The only noticeable difference I can find is the theme of the operating system: for example Ubuntu is black and purple, OpenSUSE is dark greenish. As far as functionality, that seems to only come down to the desktop type, such as GNOME or KDE. But I find that all of the distributions seem to support the same desktop types – meaning that the only difference between the various distributions is visual preference?

Is the difference located deeper in the filesystem, perhaps the organization of the operating system itself?

admin answers:

Very much so. For example Ubuntu now uses Upstart as its initialization program. However MOST distros use a traditional System V init.d system while Arch Linux uses a BSD rc.d init system
things like that.
Other things like with Fedora sudo does not come with a default install, you have to su to root or install sudo. While Ubuntu totally disables the root account and forces you to use sudo
systems like Arch or Gentoo you have to build everything yourself, and are highly customizable, one Arch install is totally different from another.

Then you have package management, RedHat and family uses RPM while Debian and family use Deb packages. I personally find Deb to be superior to RPM. And with Arch and Gentoo there are no standard packages because you compile everything from source. Rather then using APT or YUM you use Pacman and Portage respectively.

How to become a sophisticated Debian user?

Hi
I have been using Debian for about 2 years, in this 2 years, I begin to become familiar with Debian and able to use it for basic day to day use and can able to solve some problems by searching the net.
However, I think I want to become a better user for Debian, because unlike Windows, you can have a great control over Linux if you know what to do.
And I decided that I will use Debian for my desktop for the rest of my life(until there are more virus for Linux than other operation system).
So here I want to ask, how can I become a good or even sophisticated Debian user?
Any books or any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hello. Ill jump straight to the point, next semester I will be starting my major towards Computer security and Forensic Investigation. now i know a lot about Mac and PC but nothing about any Linux OS (Ubuntu, Xubuntu,Kubuntu, Debian, Cent OS, Fedora, RedHat, Arch Lunix, SUSE…so many) and there’s so many. I’m not really sure where to begin with this. from what i understand about the degree is that i’ll be trained on computer hacking to catch bad computer hackers. i know nothing about hacking and I’m not sure where to being. i plan on buying a used PC and upgrading the hardware myself and choosing a Linux so i can begin. please give good advice and be detailed as possible. I want to start learning now so that when i begin the class i will already have a understanding. thank you.

admin answers:

Here is a link to the distro wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions

But there are basically just a few major distributions.
Debian and RPM based are the two most common
Debian: Ubuntu, Knoppix, Mepis, Damn Small Linux, Xandros

RPM based:
Red hat, Fedora, Mandriva, Suse, CentOS

I suggest you either use Fedora or Ubuntu.

What version of linux is better for me?

I have never used linux before. I’m an old school kind of guy who even on my xp have my system display set to make it look like old win 95 or 98. I do a lot of stuff with mp3s and games. I want something fast, reliable, useful, and windows like. I was recently looking around at distributers and am considering vector (based on slackware) and linux mint (based on ubuntu/debian) What would be a better system for me.

What are the pros and cons of each?
Oh, and is linux posible to remove once installed?

admin answers:

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Are there any free VIOLENT games for Linux?

I’ve been looking for games for Linux (I’m running Debian), but have been disappointed in the lack of anything violent aside from the generic FPS…So, are there any free violent games for Linux?

Oh, and please don’t tell me to use Windows…I hate Windows, and I use my computer for plenty of other stuff besides gaming…And I don’t want to use Wine, I just want games that run natively in Linux.
Dan J…Don’t think I haven’t tried that…I’m not stupid.

Chris asks…

is this going to be diffucult to set up?

I am running linux debian at home.. i’m getting dsl sometime in the near future.. the router they are sending is linksys 6520 is this really hard to set up?

admin answers:

I wasn’t able to find a Linksys 6520, so I assume you mean the SpeedStream 6520. All you should have to do on your Debian box is make sure that your ethernet interface is set as a DHCP client.
